Traced origins to William Bemrose, 1792-1880, who in 1826 acquired from Holmes & Edwards their printing, bookselling and stationery business at Wirksworth which had collapsed. Soon relocated to Derby. Known as Bemrose & Co and as Bemrose & Sons from 1858. 1840s printing for local railways, eg timetables. 1860s opened London office followed in 1880s by a printing works. By end of 19th century leading printers. From 1870s emerged as leading educational publishers.1891 incorporated as Bemrose & Sons Ltd. 1909 disposed of publishing interests to George Allen. 1921 merged with two other leading printers, Alf Cooke Ltd of Leeds and Norbury, Natzio & Co Ltd of Manchester to form Universal Printers Ltd. Inter war developed packaging printing. 1953 public company. Later renamed Bemrose Corp Ltd. 1961 acquired Balding & Mansell Ltd of Wisbech; sold 1981. By 1976 major interests in printing, packaging, transfer printing, security printing, publishing. Later Bemrose Corp Plc. 2003 acquired by Appleton Group [2023]
