Traced origins as Racal Ltd to 1950 when established at Isleworth by Raymond Brown and George Calder Cunningham to make radio receivers for armed forces. 1954 relocated to Bracknell. Developed rapidly as an electronics business with particular interests in radio and radar for armed forces, mobile telephony, voice and data recorders, etc. Emerged as a leading UK business especially under (Sir) Ernest Harrison. Floated 1961. Acquired British Communications Corp Ltd, manufacturers of receivers; radar interests of Decca Ltd in c1980; in 1984 the safe and locks business of Chubb when known as Racal Chubb Plc; etc. 1980s moved in to mobile telephony via Racal Telecommunications Group Limited which emerged as a major business and was floated and gradually disposed of as Racal Telecom Plc/Vodafone. 2000 Racal Electronics Plc, now the top company, was acquired by Thomson CSF of France, later renamed Thales
