Traced origins to William G Pye, 1869-1949, who established himself as a scientific instrument maker, especially supplying Cambridge University, in 1896. Joined by his father in 1898 when known as W G Pye & Co. After 1918 diversified into making radio receivers with great success so that in 1929 this interest was sold to Pye Radio Ltd, from 1937 known as Pye Ltd, a completely separate business owned by C O Stanley. The original business continued, in particular making high technology equipment for aircraft, 1939-45. In 1947 it was sold to Pye Ltd. Pye Ltd had developed substantially under its owner, C O Stanley. Its interests came to include radio and television receivers, radio/radar/etc components, radio communication equipment, television broadcasting equipment, recorded music, etc. In decline by 1960s when controlling interest acquired by Phillips in 1966 who took full ownership in 1976
