Established 1715 as a joint stock company to acquire rights to Thomas Savery's steam engine patent. Subsequently acquired various rights of Thomas Newcomen's improved steam engine, Newcomen thereby becoming a shareholder. Thereby business had a near complete monopoly of the construction of steam engines until the patent's expiration in 1733. Proprietors were led by John Meres. Licensed their construction and use; around 100 engines built by subcontractors. Closed sometime around 1738
