Established 1830 as Edward Price & Co by, inter alia, William Wilson, a Russia merchant trading in particular in tallow. In due course became innovators in use of coconut/palm oil in place of tallow. Established plant at Vauxhall and Battersea, and in 1850s at Bromborough, Wirral, where an industrial village was also founded. Employed 84 in 1840 and 2,289 in 1855. Incorporated 1847. Developed into a world leading candle maker with other interests in soap and lubricating oil production. Provided employee welfare, etc, services - catering, training, etc. 1919 acquired by Lever Brothers Ltd. 1922 sold to Candles Ltd, a joint venture of Levers, Burmah Oil, Shell and BP. By 1982 Shell was sole shareholder. Sold to new owners 1991. Continues
