From late 19th century developed the lease of the Pitch Lake of Trinidad and thereafter imported and marketed in Europe the asphalt obtained from it. This developed into a major activity by 1888 when asphalt increasingly used for paving and road making and insulating cables. These interests subsequently held by Trinidad Asphalt Co (of USA) and later by New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co Ltd. 1926 discontinued insurance broking to focus entirely on marketing of asphalt. Incorporated 1936. 1949 business reorganised when Previte became a solely owned subsidiary of reformed Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co Ltd in which Previte family had a substantial interest.
