William Pickering, 1796-1854, established a bookshop in London in 1820 specialising in antiquarian sales. Started publishing literary works almost immediately, producing fine publications for a middle class readership. His authors included Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His bookselling remained very important throughout, important customers being the British Museum [British Library]. and the Bodleian. Bankrupt 1853. Business revived by his son, Basil M Pickering, d1878, in 1858 and closed on his death. Assets then sold to Andrew Chatto who established Pickering & Chatto [2023]
