Established by Isaac Beer, 1818-1901, son of a Canterbury retail grocer, in 1850. Established a like business at Deptford and soon diversified into a dairy and cowkeeping business. 1870s started importing pigs and rabbits from Europe and diversified into bacon curing and wholesaling at Southwark, later Smithfield. Emerged as a major bacon distribution business. Incorporated 1918 when Lovell & Christmas Ltd took an equity interest. 1933 acquired large bacon processing plant at Downton, Wiltshire. Also 1933 converted to public company. After 1945 grew also by acquisition. 1959 acquired by Fitch Lovell Ltd which already held a quarter of the ordinary equity. [2023]
