Traces origins to Thomas Beecham who started to manufacture medicinal pills in the 1840s. In Liverpool from 1847 and in Wigan from 1857 before settling at St Helens in 1876 when he started to manufacture Beechams Pills. Succeeded from 1895 by his son who in 1914 acquired land in Covent Garden via Covent Garden Estate Co Ltd. This and pharmaceutical business acquired by the financier Philip Hill in 1924 and in due course traded as Beecham Pills Ltd and Beecham Estates Ltd. Between the wars grew rapidly by acquisition including Veno Drug Co Ltd, Holloway Pills Ltd, Eno Proprietories Ltd and Macleans Ltd. Added toiletries, etc, to product range.1945 Beecham Pills and Beecham Estates were reorganised into Beecham Group Ltd and floated as a public company. 1989 as Beecham Group Plc merged with SmithKlineBeckman Group Inc of USA to form SmithKline Beecham Plc
