Traced origins to George A Phillips who became a member of the Stock Exchange in 1885 and set up in business in early 1890s. Known as G A Phillips & Co from 1895 and as Phillips & Drew from 1905. From c1914 to 1940s controlled by Drew family. From mid 1930s emerged as a leading city firm with a focus institutional clients and on gilts, under Sidney Perry who joined in 1936. Post 1945 a pioneer in investment analysis, published research, pension fund management, etc. 1984-86 acquired by Union Bank of Switzerland
