Philips family traced their business origins to a smallware manufacturing and tape weaving business at Tean, Staffordshire, in 1747. By 1770s based in Manchester where subsequently operated, inter alia, as J & N Philips and Philips & Lee. From 1790s diversified into cotton spinning and merchanting and under (Sir) George Philips, 1766-1847, this became a leading business in the 19th century. Philips family invested heavily in landed estates. 1915 incorporated as J & N Philips & Co Ltd and converted to a public company in 1919. Closed 1970
