Established in 1834 by George Philip in Liverpool as booksellers and later as map and nautical publishers. Set up a London office in 1856 and moved printing works (known as London Geographical Institute) from Liverpool to Willesden in 1902. Incorporated 1902. Liverpool business developed as Philip Son & Nephew Ltd. Started globe manufacture. 1947 acquired Edward Stanford Ltd. Continues 2012 as an imprint of Octopus Publishing Group
