With Jonathan Howarth and William Yates, he developed a leading and innovative calico printing business from c1760 at Blackburn. 1780 opened a major cotton spinning mill at Burton on Trent followed in late 1780s by a major manufacturing plant at Bolton. His sons, especially (Sir) Robert Peel, 1750-1830, substantially extended the family's interests, establishing several partnership at different locations in Lancashire and north Midlands - eg Bolton, Tamworth (Fazeley), Bury, Ramsbottom, etc - in different branches of the industry.
