Traced origins to Candy Filter Co Ltd of Westminster, established in 1906, and Paterson Engineering Co Ltd, established 1902 at Glasgow, both of which were water supply and sewage plant engineers and dominated the British and Empires markets until after 1945. Candys was established by Frank Candy who early on operated through several companies including Candy & Co Ltd in 1874 and International Water & Sewage Purification Co Ltd in 1887, both of which manufactured equipment as well as designed plant. Patersons was formed by William Paterson and moved to London in 1904. 1924 the firms relocated to Hanwell, Ealing. In 1934 Patersons acquired Candys, as well as many other businesses at about this time but many continued to trade separately. Bell Brothers Ltd, another major player, was also acquired. Purchased by Portals Ltd, papermakers, in 1960s when various businesses merged to form Paterson Candy International Ltd (PCI) which remained a major international business. Permutit Ltd, formerly United Water Softeners Ltd, was acquired by Portals in 1970 and merged with PCI in 1980s. Business acquired by Thames Water Plc in 1989, sold to Black & Veatch of USA in 1996 and relaunched as Paterson Candy Ltd
