Traced origins to 1936 when established at Bow, London, by William A de Vigier, 1912-2004, to make innovative steel props for use as scaffolding in construction. Developed as a manufacturer of construction, lifting and handling, and structural equipment. 1938 relocated to Slough. Grew by acquisitions from 1940 including that of Crawley Agrimotor Ltd in 1940. Late 1940s diversified into materials handling equipment, especially cranes. Floated 1949. Acquired Thos Storey Ltd, Stockport, makers of bailey bridges, in 1960; E H Bentall Ltd, agricultural engineers, in 1961; Adamson & Hatchette Ltd, Dukinfield, in 1964; S H Heywood, crane makers at Reddish, in 1968; Steel Group, crane and construction equipment manufacturers including Coles Cranes Ltd, in 1972; etc. From 1970s in decline and 1985 in administration. Subsequently de Vigier reacquired various parts of Acrow, later disposing of them to management
