John Palmer, 1742-1818, early on managed theatres at Bath and Bristol. In the early 1780s he proposed to the government, and then experimented with, the use of regular mailcoach services which were fast and efficient; it led to their widespread introduction resulting in substantial improvements to the postal system. This was done in association with the Post Office in which he was soon created Surveyor & Comptroller General. He continued in this role until the early 1790s and derived substantial income from it. Later a MP for Bath [2023]
