Traces origins to c1830s when Thomas Wharton, d1852, and his son, John, d1895, established a small ropemaking business at Hawes which served local needs. 1905 sold on to W R A Outhwaite, d1956, which became W R Outhwaite & Son in late 1940s. Continued as a small family business. Sold to Annison family - Peter and Ruth - in 1975. Continues
