Notes:

Traced origins to 1789 when George Newton and Thomas Chambers established an iron foundry to make iron hardware. Soon started coal extraction at Thorncliffe Valley, leasing rights from Lord Fitzwilliam. This led on to production of coke and coal gas,to gasworks construction, to coal tar distillation in 1880s. By 1900 its activities were: coal and iron ore extraction; manufacturing, building and operating blast furnaces, coke ovens and chemical plant; heavy iron founding; making riveted fabrications; producing tar based germicides. 1934 reorganised when founding families withdrew. Gave up iron foundry and mining activities in late 1940s. Important manufacturer of tanks, 1939-45. 1958 acquired Ransomes & Rapier Ltd. Also established a chemicals business making, inter alia, paints. 1972 acquired by Central & Sheerwood Ltd
