Traced origins to Rudolph Ackermann, 1764-1834, a carriage designer and maker who in 1790s opened a drawing school in the Strand and soon after started to publish illustrated drawing books and, later, finely illustrated topographical books as well as single prints. For this he became best known. Also made artists materials such as watercolour paints. His business was known as Ackermann & Co. 1825 opened print shop for his son Rudolph which, in due course, was known as Arthur Ackermann & Sons. Succeeded in business by his sons in 1832. Wound up 1855 although the Arthur Ackermann business continued as a publisher and print seller. In 1992 it merged to become Arthur Ackermann & Peter Johnson Ltd
