Traced origins to 1887 and the merger of seven limestone quarrying businesses in the Bath district to form Bath Stone Firms Ltd. These were Corsham Bath Stone Co Ltd, R J Marsh & Co Ltd, Samuel Rowe Noble, Pictor & Sons, Stone Brothers Ltd, Isaac Sumsion and Randell Saunders & Co Ltd. Subsequently grew by acquisition of other businesses and quarrying lands, in particular those connected with production of Portland stone. Early Portland acquisitions included W H P Weston in 1889 and Stewards & Co Ltd in 1900. 1911 renamed Bath & Portland Stone Firms Ltd. In particular acquisition of South Western Stone Co Ltd in 1960 made B&PG the largest producer of Portland stone. Also produced cement, lime, plaster, etc. Subsequently acquired by Hanson Plc when known as Hanson Bath & Portland
