Traced origins to John Nettlefold, 1792-1866, who in 1823 established an ironmonger's shop in Holborn, London, and soon after a woodscrew making factory at Sunbury on Thames. With support of the Chamberlain family, acquired UK rights to an innovative US screw making machine in 1854 and thereafter, as Nettlefold & Chamberlain, grew rapidly to dominate the UK industry from a factory at Smethwick. Joseph Chamberlain, 1863-1914, the future radical liberal politician, worked in the business. Chamberlain family withdrew in 1874. 1880 business was incorporated as Nettlefolds Ltd and enlarged through the simultaneous acquisition of major competitors. Subsequently declined and acquired in 1902 by Guest Keen & Co Ltd to form Guest Keen Nettlefolds Ltd (GKN)
