Traced origins to c1790 when established by Lewis Nathan as a tailor's business in Tichborne St, London. Soon after became a theatrical costumier, initially in particular supplying fancy dress to society functions. In 1845 renamed L & H Nathan when run by brothers Lewis and Henry. c1880s acquired Novelty Theatre as a venue for productions by amateur societies. From 1920s acquired related businesses such as Sigley, theatrical armourers, and Clarksons, costumiers. 1972, when still owned by Nathan family, merged with Bermans to form Bermans & Nathans
