Notes:
David Napier, 1790-1869, in c1813 established a marine steam engine business at Camlachie Works in partnership with his father; he took an economic interest in some of the ships he engined. 1821 established new works at Lancefield, Glasgow, and later a regular steamship service between Holyhead and Howth. Moved to London in mid 1830s where he and his sons established a shipbuilding/marine engineering business on the Isle of Dogs in partnership with Sir William Fairbairn. Sold out c1850. The yard was later occupied by, inter alia, Millwall Iron Works Shipbuilding & Graving Dock Co. Napier is recognised as a major contributor to marine engine development.
