Established 1889 by George L Murgatroyd as a salt works when known as Murgatroyd's Mid Cheshire Salt Works. Early 1890s built a chemical works using salt to produce ammonia soda. 1894 chemical works sold to Brunner Mond. Ivan M Levinstein controlled company at about this time. 1922 business incorporated as Murgatroyd's Salt & Chemical Co Ltd. Subsequently built new chemical works. 1954 jointly owned by the Distillers Co Ltd and Fisons Ltd. Acquired by BP Chemicals Ltd 1967 and in 1984 by Hays Chemicals Ltd.
