Notes:

The Muntz family settled at Birmingham in the late 18th century where they established rolling mills and 'mercantile' interests. On the death of the founder in 1811 these assets were acquired by George Frederic Muntz, 1794-1857. He invented an alloy of copper and zinc referred to as Muntz Metal which he developed in a separate business at French Walls Works, Smethwick, in c1842. This specialised with great success in making brass sheathing sheet for ships. Business sold by G F Muntz's son in 1864 to Muntz's Metal Co Ltd. 1921 acquired by Elliott's Metal Co Ltd, later part of IMI Ltd
