Traced origins to Nathaniel Cole, 1739-1816, who became a stockbroker in 1767. 1786 appointed first government broker representing the Bank of England, and through it the British government, in the stock market and managing gilt edged funds. Successive partners held the role until 1980s. 1801 known as Cole & Templeman, 1808 as Templeman, Cole & Co, 1829 as William H Mullens & Sons, 1846 as Mullens, Marshall & Co. 1921 merged with Steer, Lawford & Co, as Mullens, Marshall, Steer, Lawford & Co. Known as Mullens & Co from 1935. 1987, along with Rowe & Pitman and Akroyd & Smithers, acquired by S G Warburg & Co Ltd to form Mercury International Group Plc
