Established in 1920 as Mullard Radio Valve Co Ltd at Hammersmith by Stanley R Mullard, 1883-1979, to make radio valves for transmitting and receiving, initially for Royal Navy. 1925 Philips NV of Eindhoven acquired half the business so as to finance research and provide know-how. Fully acquired by Philips in 1927. Established large plant at Mitcham in c1929 followed by several others including Blackburn. Post 1945 developed extensive R&D facilities. Post 1945 emerged as leading valve maker for television sets and for special purposes. Subsequently made transistors and semi conductors. Mullard name given up by Philips in 1980s
