Notes:
Traced origins to James Morton, 1844-1923, who established a factory-based curtain lace making business in about 1875 before diversifying to heavier textiles such as carpets and tapestries. Influenced by his son, (Sir) James Morton, the business expanded by establishing a textile fabric factory at Carlisle and carpet factories in Ireland. Placed high value on arts and crafts designs and sold fine fabrics to leading retailers such as Liberty & Co. 1905 established Sundour brand. 1913 business split into two parts, James Morton & Co Ltd making lace in Scotland and Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd making design textiles at Carlisle. Morton Group acquired by Courtaulds Ltd in 1963. See also Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd
