James Morrison, 1789-1857. By 1814 partner in Joseph Todd & Co, later Todd, Morrison & Co, London wholesale haberdashers, which he developed into a major business. Sole owner 1824 having married into Todd family. Known as Morrison, Dillon & Co by 1826 when it had international connections. 1836 with the American merchant, John Cryder, James Morrison established Morrison, Cryder & Co as North Atlantic merchants and financiers of trade which, in 1841 was reorganised as Morrison Sons & Co in which two of his sons were partners. Morrison Cryder also issued securities and invested heavily in US railways. Closed c1850s. James's son, Charles, succeeded to much of his businesses and assets. Textile business reconstructed in 1863 as a joint stock business, Fore Street Warehouse Co Ltd
