Traced origins to 1811 when Barton family established a stone merchanting and quarrying business. Started coach service in c1897 with its first scheduled bus service at Nottingham in 1908. 1927 reorganised business as Barton Transport Ltd which by late 1930s emerged as a leading British operator. Diversified into bus body building for own use and into road haulage on a smaller scale. Operated first diesel-engined passenger carrying vehicle in 1930. Acquired other businesses especially from 1960s. In 1989, when known as Barton Transport Plc, sold to Wellglade Group which owned Trent Motor Traction Co Ltd. The two businesses operated separately until 2005 when merged to form Trentbarton
