Established in 1884 as Barry Dock & Railways Co to build a railway from the South Wales coalfield to the coast at Barry where docks were also constructed. Promoted by colliery owners led by David Davies of, inter alia, Ocean Coal Co Ltd. Opened from 1888. An immediate success, breaking the monopoly of Cardiff as a coal exporting port. 1891 renamed Barry Railway Co. Also worked the Vale of Glamorgan Railway. c1905 established Barry & Bristol Steamship Co Ltd. Merged into Great Western Railway in 1923
