Sometime otherwise known as Merchant Adventurers of London. Granted a royal charter in 1407 but with roots in the 13th century. A company of London and provincial merchants, enjoying monopolistic privileges and establishing a regulatory framework, notably in the export of woollen cloth especially to Germany and the Low Countries in 16th and 17th centuries and import of a wide range of goods. It had affiliated companies at places such as York, Norwich, Exeter, Newcastle, etc. Granted another royal charter 1564. 1615-17 under Sir William Cockyne [Cokayne] involved in the disastrous Cockayne Project. Lost many privileges after 1689 but continued to exist into 19th century
