Traced origins to Andrew Melrose, 1789-1855, who opened as a tea dealer and grocer in Edinburgh in 1812. Soon known as Andrew Melrose & Co and soon Edinburgh's leading grocers. A significant feature of his business was cutting out of middlemen by purchasing direct from producers and merchants. Andrew's son, William, was established at Canton as a tea merchant, 1842-53, supplying teas, inter alia, to the Edinburgh business. For many years had tea processing factory at Edinburgh. Acquired by Premier Brands, owners of Typhoo Tea brand, in 1986
