Traced origins to (Sir) John Barran, 1821-1905, who established himself as a tailor at Leeds in c1842. By 1851 he was also a clothes dealer and was a pioneering maker of ready to wear clothing. Innovative in use of machinery. From 1870s his sons were appointed partners. Emerged as a leader in ready to wear clothes, specially for boys. Floated 1903. Later made women's ready to wear clothes. Closed about late 1950s
