Traced origins to 1871 when Duncan McKechnie, d1913, opened a scrap metal processing / non ferrous metal refining business at St Helens. It was sold to United Alkali Co Ltd in 1891. McKechnie family then opened a copper and silver refining works at Widnes, 1891. 1894 acquired Alder & Bonner of Birmingham, scrap dealers, and developed there other non ferrous metal refining activities as well as production of non ferrous rods, ingots, sections, etc. This activity transferred to Aldridge, Walsall, in early 1950s. 1915 incorporated as McKechnie Brothers Ltd when started to make chemicals from smelting byproducts. From late 1940s commenced overseas expansion. 1953 public company but controlled by McKechnie family until 1970s. Diversified into brass products, engineering components, plastic products, etc. 1984 known as McKechnie Plc. 2000 acquired by management buy out. Subsequently reshaped by move from high volume low quality products to the reverse. 2005 acquired by Melrose Plc [2023]
