Traced origins to John McArthur, 1805-64, a son of the manager of Dalnotter Iron Co, Old Kilpatrick, Scotland, a very large ironworks making a wide range of iron goods, established in 1769. On arrival at Bristol, John McArthur was employed in the Acraman family's iron goods making and merchanting business with important shipbuilding interests. In 1839, with Charles Morgan, 1791-1875, he acquired the edge tool and ironmongery business of Daniel, Edward & Alfred Acraman of Bristol. This business was described in 1840 as 'Iron, copper and tinplate merchants, wholesale ironmongers and makers of edge tools'. !864 renamed Butterworth, McArthur, Bridges & Co and in 1876 Butterworth, McArthur, Nash & Co. c1880 established a branch at Dublin and subsequently in London and, in 1904, at West Bromwich. 1910 referred to as 'Iron, steel, copper, zinc, tinplate, nail and metal merchants'. 1913 renamed McArthur & Co. 1945 incorporated as McArthur (Steel & Metal) Ltd. Post 1945 grew also by acquisition. By 1980s one of largest private companies in Britain with a nationwide network of branches. Then referred to as McArthur Group. 2014 acquired by Rcapital. Distributor of agricultural, building and fencing products [2023]
