Notes:

Traced origins to Henry Maudslay, 1771-1831, who initially worked for Joseph Bramah. Established himself in business in 1798, later trading as Henry Maudslay & Co and, after being joined by Joshua Field, 1787-1863, as Maudslay Sons & Field. Emerged as a leading engineering business. Initially based in central London and at Lambeth from 1810. Designed and made a wide range of innovative machinery. Early on most notably made block making machinery for use at Portsmouth Dockyard, and later marine engines inc time balls and machine tools. From c1864-70s built ships in the Greenwich yard acquired from the National Co for Boat Building by Machinery. Succeeded in business by his sons. Incorporated 1889. Closed Lambeth Works 1900. Business finally wound up 1904.
