Traced origins to a long line of goldsmith bankers dating from 1560s and including Sir Thomas Gresham and Edward Backwell. In early 18th century known as Stone & Co and thereafter progressively owned by Martin family. Emerged as leading private bankers but with some focus on finance of merchants and corporate entities such as turnpike trusts. Incorporated 1891 as Martin's Bank Ltd with 14 branches in south east England. 1919 amalgamated with the important Bank of Liverpool to form Bank of Liverpool & Martins Ltd, a leading joint stock bank. 1919 acquired the leading private bank of Cocks, Biddulph & Co. 1928 renamed Martins Bank Ltd. 1968 merged with Barclays Bank Ltd [2023]
