Traced origins to 1823 when established in City of London by John M Oppenheim as a fur skin merchanting, dressing and dyeing business. Soon came to specialise in Alaska furseals and opened Alaska Work, Bermondsey, in 1869. From 1880 owned by Charles W Martin, d1889, formerly manager, and his sons. 1892 joined with Horst & White of Golden Lane. End of 19th century diversified from furseals into general fur trade. Incorporated 1911. Expanded rapidly in 1920s and 30s
