Traced origins to 1848 when established by William Marshall, d1861, millwright. Early on made thrashing machines and later traction engines, steam rollers, and portable steam engines. Between wars started to make tractors and diesel engines. 1936 acquired by Thos W Ward & Co Ltd of Sheffield. 1946 Wards acquired John Fowler & Co (Leeds) Ltd and merged it with Marshalls to create Marshall Fowler Ltd. Post 1945 made tractors and steam rollers. 1970s acquired by British Leyland
