Traced origins to 1631 and John Marsh, bc1610, cutler and by late 18th century specialised in spring knives. Then developed by James Marsh, retired 1819 and died 1841, into a leading Sheffield knife maker. 1810 known as James Marsh & Co and soon after as Marshes & Shepherd; in 1827 making 'pocket and running knives, table knives & forks, etc'. Started making, casting and rolling steel in c1830s at Pond Works and developed other products such as files, saws, razors and edge tools. By then USA was a major market for the business with offices at New York and Philadephia. 1846 renamed Marsh Brothers & Co. By 1860s steel production had become of major importance to Marshes. Incorporated 1907. 1918 acquired S S Brittain & Co Ltd. 1950s still led by Marsh family. Continued until c1960s [2024]
