Traces origins to Jonathan Mappin who established a silversmith's business in c1775 in Sheffield. 1810 known as Arundel & Mappin. c1849 acquired a London showroom and later a warehouse. Expanded rapidly under (Sir) Frederick Mappin, 1821-1910, and in 1851 known as Mappin Brothers, later Mappin Brothers Ltd. This business was sold by the Mappin family in 1884. In c1860 John Mappin, 1836-1913, established a quite separate electroplating and cutlery business in Sheffield and a London store, which were renamed Mappin & Webb in 1864. In 1903 this business acquired Mappin Brothers and thereafter traded as Mappin & Webb Ltd incorporating Mappin Brothers. From late 19th century royal warrant holders. Open numerous stores in UK and overseas, emerging as leading retailers as well as silversmiths and cutlery manufacturers. 1963 part of British Silverware Ltd. 1970 acquired the leading jewellers and silversmiths, Carrington & Co. 1980s acquired by Asprey and later other owners. Continuing in 2018 as retailers
