Traced origins to Manbré & Son, established at Spitalfields in c1855 to make glucose for brewing. 1870 a sister business was established at Liverpool. London business in 1874 known as Manbré Saccharine Co and that at Liverpool, the Liverpool Saccharine Co. c1876 London business moved to Hammersmith. 1919, when in difficulties, acquired by Sugar & Malt Products Ltd, owned by Albert Berry, to form Manbré Sugar & Malt Co Ltd, a public company. 1920 Brewers Sugar Co of Greenock acquired followed in 1921 by purchase of Liverpool Saccharine Co and subsequently others. 1926 acquired Garton Sons & Co Ltd of Battersea, formed in 1847 at Southampton, when known as Manbré & Garton Ltd. Subsequently diversified into other sugar products including sugar refining. Martineauxs of Whitechapel acquired in 1961. 1976 acquired by Tate & Lyle Ltd
