Traced origins to early 1830s when (Sir) William Mackenzie, 1794-1851, started his contracting business having formerly worked as resident engineer, etc, on canal projects. Then involved in tunnel construction for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway Co. His business was dominated from outset by railway construction especially in the north west but it handled other types of project and undertook civil engineering consultancy work. 1834 joined by his brother, Edward, 1811-80. railway builder and civil engineer. In 1840s worked closely and successfully with Thomas Brassey with whom he became the leading railway contractor in Europe, especially France, from the 1840s. Traded, inter alia, as William Mackenzie & Co and Mackenzie & Brassey
