Traced origins to Peter MacCallum, d1854, who in c1812 established a nail and spike making business supplying local shipyards. From 1850s, by when known as P MacCullum & Sons, started to deal in iron, later steel ship plates, angels, etc, also supplying shipyards, and became a leader in this business on the Lower Clyde. Became closely associated with the shipowning business, Lang & Fulton, established 1878, and developed other shipping interests for movement of steel, especially Ard Coasters which it owned from 1918. Incorporated 1907. Post 1945 expanded steel stockholding interests and ended shipowning in 1974
