Traced origins to 1616 when brewery on Anchor Brewhouse site first established by Monger family. Owned by Thrale family from 1729 who developed it into a leading London brewery. In this Henry Thrale was especially important. Acquired from Thrales by David Barclay in c1770s and in 1781 known as Barclay Perkins & Co. By then already a very important London brewery. Incorporated 1896. 1951 established Blue Nile Brewery at Khartoum. 1955 merged with Courage & Co Ltd to form Courage & Barclay Ltd [2023]
