As Kerr & Lyle, emerged as major Greenock shipowners by mid 19th century. Lyle family diversified into sugar refining, creating the largest refining business at Greenock which, as Abram Lyle & Sons Ltd, merged with Henry Tate & Sons Ltd in 1921 to create Tate & Lyle Ltd. Lyle family's shipping interests, by then modest, reorganised in 1890 into Lyle Shipping Co Ltd which was entirely separate from sugar refining business. By then Glasgow based. Reformed 1903. Developed into a moderate sized tramp shipping business. From 1960s renewed fleet with bulk carriers and from 1970s diversified into support services for North Sea oil industry and insurance broking. 1968 joined with H Hogarth & Sons Ltd to established Scottish Ship Management Ltd to mange their fleets
