Traced origins to Henry Barber, 1783-1858, who set up in business in 1820s as a colonial broker. Known variously as Barber Neate & Co, Barber Nephew & Co and Barber Simpson & Co. Business broken up into three independent firms in 1870s and 80s, one part being Edward Barber & Co, 'general produce brokers' specialising in importation of animal hair - bristles, horsehair, cowhair, goathair, etc. 1990 still operating as produce brokers at Sidcup
