Traced origins to 1848 when established at Eversleigh by John Barber, 1824-81, to sell landed property by auction. Soon relocated to Wellington. Developed as a leading land and livestock valuation and auctioneering business, in particular operating the very large livestock market at Wellington. 1873 renamed Barber & Son. 1938 Barber family withdrew. 1989 gave up livestock business to focus on real estate valuation and sale.
