Traced origins to 1828 when William Carlisle established a table knife making/ivory cutting business at Sheffield. 1876 Carlisle Brothers joined with William Lockwood to make piston rings for steam engines and this developed into a major business known as W Lockwood & C G Carlisle from 1877. Did a large business in providing rings for marine engines. 1898 incorporated as Lockwood & Carlisle Ltd (while the continuing ivory cutting business was incorporated as Carlisle Brothers Ltd until closed in 1938). Closed Sheffield plant in 1982 and merged with Torday Ltd to form Torday & Carlisle Plc
